KB is quoted as saying "It's costing us the entire gate receipts from the matches against Cardiff, Derby and Leeds to pay for the loan of striker Andy Cole for the rest of the season."

OK... quick number crunch...

67,500 x average seat price of say £20 (taking into account season tickets, promotions, discounts, concessions etc.)

That's £1.35m for 8 games or a mere £168,750 per game! And if he maintains his current (last 5 seasons) goalscoring ratio of 1 in 3, that's £450,000 per goal if he scores 3!

Good value or not?

I dont think its that much, from what I read hes on 20k a week which means he'll probably cost us about 200k overall.

plus if you take of season ticket holders (about 12000+ I think) that takes it down to 30000 paying consumers for the 3 games.

WHAT? £200k overall?! Get real!! He's actually on £35k per week and that's just just what he's receiving. Don't forget national insurance payments, insurances, signing on fee, agents fees, administration etc...etc.... And it was Karen Brady who said QUOTE "It's costing us the entire gate receipts from the matches against Cardiff, Derby and Leeds to pay for the loan of striker Andy Cole for the rest of the season."

OK... so if you assume only 30000 paying customers at £20 each, that's still £0.6m.

Read the original post pal... it was a simple question. Or should I have made it totally transparent by adding "Do you think it's..." good value or not?

In answer to the question, yes, I think that's good value for money. And most people outside the club, and in the media, appear to agree with me.

This is a great signing. **thumbup

Yes but this it what it costs in the modern day, dont see what all the fuss is about, if he scores a few and helps Blues get up, the money Blues pay him will seem like peanuts.

That's because Mido is terrible.

As for Cole, it's great value if we go up, poor value if we do not. It also goes some way towards appeasing those who derided the board for not taking any big money gambles. Not all the way by any means, but it is a step in the right direction.

I guess the cost of signing Cole at about £500k, if he scores one goal that wins a game and that means automatic promotion because of those points then clearly he is worth the money.

If he slips over while dancing at the Cricket World Cup and does not play for the rest of the season then he is clearly not worth the money.

But thats the gamble.

I think the gamble has a decent chance of working (however, the spin put on it by David Gold calling him "world class" is absolutely ridiculous), I am more concerned with the prospect of us spending £2 million of our 2007/2008 transfer kitty on wages for a player that is probably getting too old for the Premier League - but I'm happy to face that when we get there!

60million if we go up, and if Cole helps, hes defiantly worth it

it'd more likely be half that amount

Andy Cole, won everything going at club level, 2nd highest ever Premiership scorer, former England international, one of the most feared strikers in Europe at Man Utd

i think he deserves the wage on reputation alone

over the hill....maybe. but you can't deny that Andy Cole is not a proven striker and that there is no justification for his wage

KB is quoted as saying "It's costing us the entire gate receipts from the matches against Cardiff, Derby and Leeds to pay for the loan of striker Andy Cole for the rest of the season."

Does that mean we aren't losing £XX millions each month?

I get confused with our board's financial statements. One minute we are next to the knacker's yard, the next minute we are going to spend zillions if we get promoted, then after that we spend three gate receipts to get in a quality player for a very crucial period.

Was she saying we couldn't afford it or was she saying it was too much?

As I said, the board really confuse me at times, so I just go on the basis that they aren't interested in losing money, only in making and keeping money. So my response to Karren would be - "So What?"

If Cole scores 3 goals and we win them 1- 0 that's 9 pts.. That's possible promotion that will do for me.. So that makes your so called £168,750 per game good value.

I think you might be forgetting the fact that you have to take into consideration the other bills, such as wages, power, policing and other such matchday costs.

Can only really be answered with hindsight. If his contribution really makes the difference between us getting promoted or not then it will be good value.

However, let's say his loan will cost £300-500k (including everything). That amount would easily pay for (a) ATC poll tax on away fans to be scrapped next season, (B) Junior Blues to be free next season, © mascots packages to be free next season, (d) free coaches to away matches to become the norm next season. My view is that the long term health of the club is best served by investing it on initiatives to grow the fan base (now smaller than norwich, ipswich, leicester, etc) - whilst playing the 4 fit strikers that we've signed already - rather than throwing it at a short term loan of another fading ex-superstar.

I don't object to the club paying the going rate for talent but I do object to them squeezing every last penny out of the fans and then (to paraphrase Mr.Sullivan) sp*nking the money up the wall to pay for the likes of Sutton, Yorke, Butt and quite possibily Cole.

... and that is assuming that the player he replaced would have scored no goals. It is not the goals he scores that matters, but the additional goals that should go into the equation.

From the sums being talked about, it is difficult to see the case when you look at it in those terms.

It amazes me the level of negativity on this board at times, who gives a monkeys what Cole is costing, it's not costing anyone more money directly is it!

Were not scoring a bagfull of goals at the moment and Cole is a quality player his stats don't lie. I have been a Blues supporter all my life but have always been p*ss*d off with the negativity of our fans, if we signed Shevchenko on a loan till the end of the season, everyone would be moaning about the cost and well he hasn't set the world alight for Chelsea.

Tell you what heres an idea lets all get excited that a quality player has been brought in to help Blues get over the finish line and back to the Prem. We are in a good position in the league and this could be a very clever signing!

God cheer up everyone and stop being so bloody miserable!!!!

If you're going to go into every little thing then you need to for both sides BB!! So Karren has spun it that we've no money by putting it how she has. And fair play to her, i dont want other teams thinking we've got loads cos then you have to pay way over the odds, (Chelsea). But you've fell for it!

What about extra shirt sales as they have very cleverly offered free printing of his name and number? What about the extra crowd receipts with people coming to watch a player who will talked about in years to come? What about the sponsorship money, money from Sky already in place and now it wouldn't surprise me if Sky get at least 1 more game of ours because of Cole...??

I see where ur worried at first, but it evens out and is DEFO worth the money for me.
